The project “Improving Access to Safe Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, and Food Distribution in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan” is aimed at enhancing living conditions for returnees from Pakistan. This initiative is funded and managed in collaboration with NICCO’s and is implemented by RSDO organization, employing evidence-based practices to ensure the sustainable provision of safe water, dignified sanitation, and good hygiene practices across diverse contexts.

A part of this project will be implemented in Kandahar City, targeting the areas of Speen Bourdak and Daman. The objective is to improve access to safe water and sanitation, and provide food aid to returnees under these challenging circumstances through the installation of water supply facilities, distribution of sanitation supplies, and food distribution.

The project main activities are:

Improvement of Water Supply Facilities and Promotion of Hygiene Practices:

  • Objective: To improve access to safe water for approximately 18,000 people in 3,000 households and promote proper hygiene practices among 3,000 individuals in 500 households.
  • Strategy: Install water supply facilities and water tanks in areas with a high number of returnees and inadequate water infrastructure. Conduct hygiene promotion campaigns to educate residents on maintaining cleanliness and preventing waterborne diseases.

Food Distribution:

  • Objective: To alleviate food insecurity among highly vulnerable households.
  • Strategy: Identify 500 households facing severe food crises based on criteria set by the Food Security and Agriculture Cluster (FSAC). Distribute food aid accordingly and monitor the impact of the intervention.

Project Timeline:

  • Start Date: February 23, 2024
  • End Date: July 22, 2024

Upon completion of the project, the returnees in Kandahar Province will have improved access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities. They will also benefit from enhanced food security and better hygiene practices, reducing the incidence of health issues and contributing to their overall well-being.
