Afrad is one of the 40 million people who struggle daily in Afghanistan. He is 26 years old and lives in the Maidan Hawaii village in Feroz Koh district-Ghor province. He lives with his family of 12 members.
He studied until 12th grade, he had many ambitions for his future to help his people and bring positive changes in his communities’ people lives. However, due to his bad financial situation; he could not go on to further education and go to college to pursue his dreams and reach his life ambitions. He also wanted his family members to go to school and study for their future but because of Afrad’s financial situation they could not go to school and it remained a dream forever.
Moreover, drought, flood, and no income source lead him to different difficulties in his life that stopped him from progressing in his career and even worse destroyed the progress that he had so far. He had to work to feed his family and his family suffered from financial problems and hunger, after all, of these obstacles the COVID-19 pandemic also affected his life, income, and decreased job opportunities significantly.
Even with all of these obstacles, he still could find a job here and there, but after the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan collapsed and the Taliban got power, Afrad could not find a job anymore. Then he decided to immigrate to Iran for work. He accepted all the risks and dangers and immigrated illegally to Iran to build a better future for himself and his family members and he said:
“After one and a half years of working in Iran, I was deported. I tried to go to Iran again but it was impossible to cross the border, so I decided to come back home and look after my family. I used to go and find a job in the city but I could not get any for many days. My income was something around 2000-3000 (22-33 Dollars) per month which is really challenging for a family of 12 people,” Said Afrad.
Afrad attended the ABADEI vocational training classes in Feroz Koh- Ghor VTC, which was conducted with the support of UNDP and AAH organizations. He is learning to be a male tailor. Afrad attends a male tailoring class every day for 4 hours. Besides tailoring, He is also learning about small business, life skills, and general education.
“I received theoretical and practical trainings from the ABADEI project. It changed my life forever and made my life better. Now With UNDP’s support, I could afford food for my family and work without any stress and finally” Says Afrad
