On October 7, 2023, at approximately 11:00 AM local time, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in Zindajan district that is located 40 kilometers to the west of Herat, Afghanistan. Following the initial earthquake, several aftershocks have been reported, in neighboring districts and Herat city.
According to OCHA it is estimated that 12,110 people equal to 1,730 families have been affected by the earthquake in the districts of Zindajan, Kushki Robat Sangee, Injil, and Gulran. The number of affected households is expected to rise as assessments are continuing in the affected areas (Oct 12, 2013).
Based on the joint assessment team led by OCHA’a partners including RSDO, the earthquake response priorities encompass emergency shelter, non-food items, WASH food assistance, and protection. Children and women, who are especially vulnerable, require emergency mental health and psychosocial support due to severe psychological distress.
RSDO with the partnership and financial support of Action Against Hunger -ACF has planned to deliver the emergency response imitative to the recent deadliest earthquake in Herat province, Afghanistan. In response to the earthquake and its aftershocks, we have deployed our emergency team to the affected region to conduct assessments in collaboration with ACF and other NGOs to identify needs of the affected households.
Our initial partnership plan is to distribute NFI kits to 200 most vulnerable households along with the 100 USD multi-purpose cash. The distribution of NFIs and cash to the earthquake-affected families, especially as winter approaches, not only addresses immediate survival needs but also contributes to the overall well-being, safety, and resilience of these communities during challenging times.
The identification and selection of beneficiaries, as well as the distribution of NFI kits, will be conducted in close coordination and partnership with the Herat sectoral department, UN-OCHA and IOM that is the leading agency responsible for the NFI cluster, ensuring a well-coordinated and effective response.
The people of Herat have been enduring long-term challenges, including poverty, drought, conflict, and economic recession. Unfortunately, the recent earthquake in Herat has further burdened them, rendering them more vulnerable to future disasters. Many are now deeply concerned about the impending winter, which threatens to exacerbate their hardships. The resilience of these communities is being tested, and their collective strength is essential as they face these mounting challenges.
Hence, in addition to the urgent emergency response aimed at mitigating the immediate impact of the disaster, there is a pressing need for long-term initiatives focused on rebuilding and restoring the livelihoods of these communities. These initiatives are essential to sustain their lives, enhance their resilience, and prepare them to better withstand potential future shocks and challenges.
RSDO urgently calls upon its supporters and partners to swiftly mobilize resources to assist in providing crucial access to housing, adequate food, clean drinking water, safe sanitation, and essential healthcare services. The earthquake has left thousands of families with their homes in ruins, and they are now facing an uncertain future.
