The project titled ” Self-Advocacy and Voice of People with Disabilities in West Region of Afghanistan” is spearheaded by the Razi Social Development Organization (RSDO) and generously funded by the Protect Defenders organization (FIDDH). This initiative strategically addresses the multifaceted challenges confronted by people with disabilities, with a particular focus on those who are deaf and blind, within the provinces of Farah, Herat, and Ghor.
Over the course of six months, the project endeavors to bolster self-advocacy and social communication skills among 240 people with disabilities. The overarching goal is to empower them in conflict management, self-advocacy, and the articulation of their needs and rights. Simultaneously, the project aspires to heighten awareness of disability rights among community leaders in specified cities and 40 villages. This heightened awareness is intended to ensure their proactive facilitation of the participation of people with disabilities (PWDs) in the various processes of community development.
The primary target demographic encompasses people with disabilities, youth/students with disabilities, community leaders, families with disabilities, and general community members. The project is strategically designed to address identified issues such as the lack of skills among PWDs to express their needs and rights, discrimination encountered in educational settings, and the dual challenges of poverty and disability.
The principal objective of the project is to cultivate self-advocacy skills and social communication knowledge among men with disabilities. Specific objectives include empowering men with disabilities to actively engage in community development initiatives, facilitating students with disabilities to express themselves within educational settings, and augmenting the knowledge of community leaders regarding disability rights.
The project employs a comprehensive capacity-building approach, targeting root causes such as insufficient awareness among community leaders, inadequate advocacy skills among disabled men, and negative societal attitudes. The methodology encompasses community dialogues, training workshops, the integration of PWDs into advocacy groups, and impactful awareness campaigns through social media, radio broadcasting, and theatre shows.
Project activities are meticulously outlined in a chronological order, commencing with the identification and selection of beneficiaries, followed by training workshops conducted across various provinces, community dialogues, the integration of PWDs into advocacy groups, and culminating in public awareness campaigns disseminated through diverse channels.
The ” Self-Advocacy and Voice of People with Disabilities in West Region of Afghanistan” project is committed to empowering men with disabilities, refining their social communication skills, and fostering inclusivity in community development. The holistic approach adopted encompasses a spectrum of activities aimed at effecting enduring positive changes for PWDs and their communities.
