A crucial agricultural assistance project, supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and implemented by Razi Social Development Organization (RSDO), was launched to support vulnerable farmers in Herat province. This project aimed to provide much-needed relief to farmers impacted by natural disasters and other challenges, ultimately contributing to the recovery of their livelihoods and agricultural productivity.
The project’s survey phase began in July 2024 and concluded in October 2024, covering six districts in Herat, including Koshk-e-Kohna, Kohsan, Pashton Zarghon, Karokh, Guzar, Enjil, and the center of Herat city. In close collaboration with the Agriculture Departments of each district, a thorough selection process was carried out to identify the most vulnerable farmers who met the project’s eligibility criteria.

A total of 12,100 beneficiaries were selected for assistance across the districts. The beneficiaries were distributed as follows:

  • 5,550 beneficiaries from Koshk-e-Kohna
  • 1,300 beneficiaries from Kohsan
  • 1,700 beneficiaries from Karokh
  • 1,500 beneficiaries from Pashton Zarghon
  • 1,500 beneficiaries from Guzar
  • 1,500 beneficiaries from Enjil
  • 600 beneficiaries from the center of Herat city

Each of the selected beneficiaries received 50 kg of wheat seed, 50 kg of urea, and 50 kg of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), which are essential for improving soil fertility and ensuring a successful crop yield. These agricultural inputs were intended to help farmers recover from setbacks caused by disasters, enabling them to continue their agricultural activities and rebuild their livelihoods.
The primary objective of this project was to provide timely support to those farmers who were hit hardest by natural calamities, such as droughts and floods, which severely impacted agricultural production in the region. By distributing these critical inputs, the project aimed not only to boost agricultural output but also to promote food security and resilience among vulnerable farming communities in Herat.
This initiative, coordinated closely with local agricultural authorities, represents a significant effort to help farmers in Herat overcome the ongoing challenges they face due to environmental and economic stresses. The assistance provided by the FAO and RSDO is an important step toward fostering agricultural sustainability and improving the quality of life for farmers in these communities.
