In the Ning Abad village, Besmellah has emerged as a compassionate mediator, dedicating over twenty-six years to resolving conflicts and restoring peace in his community. His motivation is as straightforward as it is profound: “I just want to bring peace and stability to our community—it’s my duty as a human being.”
His expertise in conflict resolution spans various issues, from familial disputes to religious tensions and inheritance conflicts between tribes and families. His approach involves orchestrating insider mediation meetings and enlisting the support of influential figures, elders, scholars, and knowledgeable individuals to facilitate constructive dialogue.
Besmellah Khan faced numerous challenges on his journey, but he consistently maintained a practical and professional approach as a mediator. Instead of making decisions based on emotions, he relied on logical reasoning.
One of his most difficult conflicts he resolved was as following:
He says: “In Ning Abad Village, Injil District, a dispute emerged concerning the fair distribution of WFP food assistance. The source of contention was the unequal treatment, as a tribe from Karokh District was receiving preferential treatment in the allocation of aid, done without consulting the village Arbab.
This distribution caused tension among the villagers, sparking a dispute that needed resolution. Arbab Bismillah Khan stepped in as the mediator to address the issue. Through his intervention, the conflict was successfully resolved. Arbab Bismillah Khan ensured a fair distribution of the assistance, putting an end to the disparities and restoring harmony to the village.
Undeterred by the complexity of the situation, Besmillah took the initiative to conduct mediation meetings from within the community. He skillfully navigated the intricate web of emotions and grievances surrounding the dispute. Through persistent efforts and personal sacrifices, Besmillah strategically involved respected elders and influential figures from the village. This comprehensive approach resulted in a successful reconciliation, not only bringing peace and happiness back to the couple’s lives but also revitalizing unity within the entire village.”
Besmillah has learned a lot about conflict resolution from the Strengthening Social Cohesion in Afghanistan (SSCA) project. The project is funded by the Search for Common Ground organization and implemented by the Razi Social Development Organization (RSDO), this transformative project provides social cohesion training to participants like Besmillah, equipping them with essential skills to navigate and resolve conflicts effectively.
He says: “This project changed everything for me. It made me better at dealing with problems and conflicts in a smart way. Thanks to the Search for Common Ground Project, I’ve learned that caring about others and using smart strategies can bring real peace and harmony, even when things are tough among communities”
